Springfield Police Chief Robert Williams says his officers are held to a higher standard. Thursday, several of those officers were honored for going beyond that standard by exhibiting extraordinary bravery, dedication, resourcefulness or otherwise distinguishing themselves during 2011.

Officer Ryan Irwin, a neighborhood police officer in Beat 800, which includes Enos Park, “is the epitome of what an NPO should be,” Williams said.  Irwin received the Abraham Lincoln Award for efforts that included establishing a landlord council to deal with problem tenants, quality of life and other issues in the neighborhood, as well as volunteering to assist Enos Park residents in other activities.

Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 11 AM.

We will unveil an historic plaque in the southwest corner of the Park followed by a tour of one of four historic neighborhood walks. The ceremony in Enos Park starts at 11 a.m. and pays homage to the Lithuanian settlers of Springfield and St. Vincent de Paul Lithuanian Catholic Church, a focal point for the Lithuanian families who lived in our neighborhood. The church was originally built at the corner of Enos and 8th Street.  Congressman Shimkus and the Mayor will attend.
Following the dedication we will follow the St John’s Inspiring Health Walk to 8th and Enos. This route will take us by 13 houses identified as potential National Historic or City Landmark homes. Our walking tour will be highlighted by use of smart phones to receive podcasts of unique, historic homes along the path from the Park to the site of St. Vincent’s original location. These podcasts, produced by students from Robert Morris University, will include pictures and narration describing special homes and residents along a Tour named “Inspiring Walk” for its destination to St. John’s Hospital.
Bring your smart phone and join us Saturday, May 19, 11 a.m. at Enos Park.

Plans are underway to reopen the Suzie-Q’s Restaurant this summer. Hopes are that the reopening will happen in July. New owner Mike Meyer is currently making some structural and aesthetic improvements to the building. He has also been in touch with former owner Suzie Weiss, who has offered to come in and cook periodically.

Meyer bought the building from the Enos Park Development LLC, a land banking entity of the Enos Park Neighborhood Association.  [Association President, Steve] Combs  is happy that Meyer intends to focus on serving food in a family atmosphere.

“One of our greatest concerns was making sure we passed it on to the right person,” Combs said. “We wanted to make sure it wasn’t going to be a bar that sold hot dogs.”

Take Back the Night http://www.epnia.com/events/take-back-the-night/ http://www.epnia.com/events/take-back-the-night/#comments Mon, 16 Apr 2012 17:47:04 +0000 carolkn http://www.epnia.com/?p=1000 Continue reading ]]> “Take Back the Night” is an annual event designed to draw attention to the issues of violence against women, domestic abuse, and sexual assault. Cities across the nation hold rallies, marches, and vigils to symbolically reclaim the night and promote a safer community. For several years now, students from Lincoln Land Community College and the University of Illinois at Springfield have helped organize a joint campus event each spring. However, they  have decided it would be more appropriate to take the event into the community and wanted to partner with a neighborhood organization.

Students from the Feminist Activist Coalition, who are helping to organize the event, attended the March membership meeting and invited Enos Park to be a partner in this year’s event.

Take Back the Night will be held on Friday, April 20 from 7:30-9 p.m. Participants are invited to gather at Enos Park at dusk for a walk around the neighborhood.  We will then return to the park for refreshments and music. We encourage residents to come out and meet your neighbors and show support for taking back the night in our community!

For more information, contact Adrea Karsgaard at 891-7236 or visit www.takebackthenight.org.

The 1859 James M. Garland House

With the help of the Historic Sites Commission, this house narrowly escaped demolition in 2005. Over the past two years it has been transformed from boarded to beautiful. Exterior brackets, spindles and porch details have
been lovingly restored by skilled craftsmen. A curved interior staircase is beautifully restored as well. Now the house awaits its new single-family homeowner in the vital Enos Park neighborhood.

We will review the Green Up Clean Up program for 2012. In an effort to improve the exterior look and safety of owner occupied homes, Enos Park Development LLC will provide matching grants up to $500 for general improvements and up to $1,000 for specific work done on siding. I’ve attached the April Banner that explains the program in more detail and has an application you can fill out and bring with you to the meeting. There are limits to how many awards will be granted and how much time you have to apply. We will also review the current status of our efforts to secure blighted properties and our success in finding new home owners.
